FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Jurors returned their verdict Thursday for a 22-year-old Fort Wayne man charged in a deadly 2021 shooting.
Jalan Xzayvior Carpenter was found guilty of murdering 19-year-old John Peterson, along with a sentencing enhancement for using a gun in the slaying. He faces a potential sentence of up to 85 years in prison.
Peterson was gunned down near the intersection of Vance Avenue and Reed Road on March 26, 2021. A man who was in the car with him during the shooting said they were driving when Peterson noticed a Chevy Tahoe behind them, court records say.
“Someone’s getting out,” Peterson told the driver before the gunfire began, with police finding 17 .300 Blackout rifle shell casings at the scene.
