Dogs are known as man's best friend for a reason, but what happens if their human companion dies?

With that question in mind, Rita Lynd founded the Hannah Foundation, of which she remains president.

Initially at Spreyton, now at Lower Barrington, Hannah's Farm dog sanctuary has been providing a home and care for the pets left behind for the past six years.

Debbie McGinlay and Di Waddington live in dwellings on the 61-acre property with their husbands, volunteering their time to love the dogs left to the foundation in owners' wills as if the pets were their own.

"Every time you walk in the door, you've got a waggly tail and it's the best ever," Mrs Waddington said.
