SANFORD, Maine — Electricity is now flowing from a new 28-megawatt solar farm in Sanford.

Walden Renewables held a ribbon-cutting for the project Thursday morning.

Company officials said the panels at the Mousam River Solar Project can offset the power needs of nearly 6,000 average households, providing cleaner energy to the city.

Through a voluntary community benefit agreement, the project will also pay the city $650,000 over time to support training for clean-energy jobs. The funding will go toward programs at York County Community College and the Sanford Regional Technical Center.

Walden Renewables has several other renewable energy projects in the New England area, including solar farms in Wells and Leeds.
