The Santa Maria City Council will send a letter to the Department of Homeland Security seeking more information about an immigration enforcement action that took place on Sunday in downtown Santa Maria.

The council made the decision Tuesday after multiple speakers during public comment referenced the arrest in the parking lot of 1505 S. Broadway, as well as a separate enforcement action that took place near Telephone Road outside of the city limits on Nov. 13.

Councilmember Gloria Soto, who was at the Nov. 13 enforcement action, requested that the letter be drafted after multiple speakers asked the Council to do more to protect the immigrant community locally, and expressed regret that the council did not take action at a previous meeting to create an immigration ad-hoc committee as
