NASA scientists have discovered a mysterious rock on the surface of Mars that appears out of place. The unusual rock was spotted by NASA's Perseverance rover at Vernodden, near the Jezero Crater.
The rock measures about 80 centimetres (31 inches) in size and stands out from the surrounding terrain, NASA wrote in its blog, titled "A Stranger In Our Midst". Scientists are studying it to understand why it looks different from other rocks in the area.
The space agency has named the rock ‘Phippsakla.’ Last week, the team studied it more closely and noticed its shape and size were unusual.
NASA's Perseverance rover used its SuperCam laser and special instruments to study the rock closely. The analysis showed that the rock has a lot of iron and nickel in it. These elements are rare on Mars,
