Authorities in Bella Coola, British Columbia, are advising residents to remain indoors following a bear attack that occurred Thursday afternoon. The incident, which took place around 1:30 p.m. near Acwsalcta School, left several students injured. The bear involved has not yet been located, prompting a response from armed RCMP and B.C. Conservation Service officers.
While police have not confirmed the exact number of injuries, they described them as "severe and serious." The ages and genders of the victims have also not been disclosed, but reports indicate that they were students from the local area. The Nuxalk Nation has been actively communicating with the community, urging residents to avoid walking outside until the bear is found.
Chief Samuel Schooner of the Nuxalk Nation posted on social media, stating, "There has been a bear incident near 4 Mile. For the safety of all, please stay indoors, off the highway near the administration office, and off all trails. First responders are on site along with healers. Please stay clear as they do their work."
The bear's species has not been confirmed, with speculation that it could be either a black bear or a grizzly bear. Bears are known to exhibit aggressive behavior during this time of year as they prepare for hibernation, which raises concerns for public safety.
In light of the attack, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service has also advised residents to steer clear of the forested and river areas near the 4 Mile subdivision. The Nuxalk Nation has reported that first responders are on the scene, and they are working to ensure that all individuals involved receive medical support.
Acwsalcta School announced it will be closed on Friday due to the incident, as the community continues to deal with the aftermath of the attack. Chief Schooner expressed his concern for those affected, stating, "We are devastated for the individuals and families impacted by the bear incident. All individuals involved are receiving medical support and our priority is to ensure that they are safe."
