BAYPORT, Minn. — Minnesota Correctional Facility Stillwater looks the same on the outside as it has for decades, an intimidating brick building on the eastern side of the metro.

Inside, though, and it's a completely different story.

"This is the new Stillwater," Israel Ray Gaitan, an inmate at the facility, said.

In May, state officials announced that MCF Stillwater, a 114 year old building, would be shut down by 2029, pointing to aging infrastructure causing safety and operational integrity issues.

Since the announcement, the population has largely been transferred to other facilities. The Department of Corrections invited media inside Thursday to see how the ramp down has gone so far.

DOC Commissioner Paul Schnell spoke to media, reiterating the cost of repairing the facility.
