The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) on Thursday said it has uncovered a sprawling seven-kilometre tunnel network in the southern Gaza Strip, where it believes Israeli Lieutenant Hadar Goldin died while being held by Hamas in 2014, before his remains were returned to Israel last week.
The military also released footage of what it described as a “major” Hamas tunnel system used to hold hostages, move operatives, and store weapons throughout the war that has raged since the October 7, 2023 attacks, as well as during previous conflicts.
According to the IDF, the underground passageway is “one of the most significant and complex” tunnels uncovered in Gaza to date. The network extends more than seven kilometres, reaches a depth of around 25 metres, and contains roughly 80 rooms.
