Congressman Eric Swalwell announced he is running for California governor Thursday night.

Swalwell's candidacy for California governor was revealed through the congressman's new website .

The announcement came as many others have also joined the already crowded and competitive race for the governor's seat, including former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, former Congresswoman Katie Porter, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.

Swalwell represents the 14th California Congressional District, which covers parts of the East Bay including Dublin, Livermore, Hayward, San Leandro, Fremont and Union City.
