Dhaka: A moderate earthquake shook central Bangladesh on Friday morning, killing several people and causing damage to buildings in and around the capital Dhaka. The quake had a magnitude of about 5.7 and struck near Narsingdi district, around 30 to 40 kilometres east of Dhaka, according to early reports from seismic agencies.
Police and local officials said at least three people were confirmed dead, while some media reports put the number as high as six. Many others were injured as parts of buildings collapsed, railings gave way and people rushed out of homes and offices in panic. Rescue teams were deployed to check damaged structures and assist those hurt.
Tremors were felt across Dhaka and in neighbouring areas of India, including Kolkata and parts of West Bengal. Residents described
