Rachel Reeves is set to charge average drivers £250 each after a pay-per-mile car tax u-turn. Addressing pay-per-mile car tax in the Autumn Budget, Labour Party Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has quashed these rumours in the Commons.

In response to a question posed by Charlie Dewhirst, Conservative MP for Bridlington and the Wolds, in which he referred to such a tax as “yet another slap in the face from this government for the countryside and for our motorists”, Ms Aelxander spoke out.

Ms Alexander said: “There are no proposals to introduce a national pay-per-mile scheme. This government is firmly on the side of drivers, as I’ve set out already.
