It’s just after 6 p.m., and the brothers are walking side by side, both with the assistance of light brown canes.

Practice has wrapped up inside Laurel’s quaint Spartan Stadium, and it’s time to get away from the cold. The brothers each have one hand gripping their canes, shoving them into the grass with each step, and the other stuffed into their green jackets that both read “Coach Miles.”

The older brother, George Miles, may be nearing the end of his coaching journey. He had a 31-year run as Laurel’s head coach — ending in 2003 — and guided the Spartans to what remains the program’s only WPIAL championship in 1980. They beat Clairton in that game 14-12.

Nowadays, nearing 80 years old, he sits in his chair and volunteers to help with special teams. He still loves being around the kids.
