For junior Sophia Buchner, it was a case of being thrown straight into the fire when she was thrust into her role as Hathaway Brown School’s varsity starting goalkeeper as only a freshman.
But those days Buchner spent cutting her teeth against stout competition featuring girls that, in many cases, had four times the amount of experience on the pitch as she did served as the perfect way for the Pepper Pike resident to grow quickly and comfortably into the role.
“Her journey from a nervous freshman goalkeeper thrust into the varsity spotlight to an All-Greater Cleveland player and one of the stalwarts of our team is something she should be proud of,” Blazers’ goalkeeping coach, Chris Staats, told the Cleveland Jewish News.
