State library board members pushed the issue of a local library’s state funding down the road again, while finalizing a new policy change restricting children and teen books with transgender characters.

The Alabama Public Library Service board of trustees voted Nov. 20 to delay a decision on the funding for Fairhope library until board chair and Alabama GOP president John Wahl reads the controversial books that the Fairhope board determined should remain in the teen section.

“Are you becoming the censor-in-chief for Alabama that you’re reading these books?” board member Ron Snider asked Wahl before the vote.

Snider said the local board should be the final arbiters of book placement, and that APLS can’t make choices for all 226 libraries in the state.
