The Department of Justice revoked a Venezuelan woman's U.S. citizenship after she was convicted of health care fraud in southern Florida, officials announced in a news release Wednesday.

Marieva Briceno, a native of Venezuela who owned three "purported" medical clinics in the Detroit, Michigan area, defrauded more than $5.4 million from Medicare by paying people "to undergo unnecessary tests and procedures."

Officials say she and co-conspirators did this from May 2007 to January 2010, "with Briceno personally receiving approximately $513,200 in fraudulent payouts."

On Dec. 21, 2009, Briceno applied for U.S. citizenship, and she was naturalized on March 19, 2010.
