EVANSVILLE – Riverside Drive, shuttered due to a giant sinkhole for the last nine months, could at least partially reopen soon.

In a statement late Friday morning, the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility said it "expects" to open one lane in each direction by mid-morning Monday, Nov. 24. That's if the weather and other conditions cooperate.

The utility wanted to open the stretch on Friday, but said "sustained rainfall throughout the week delayed the restoration work at the sinkhole site."

It's just the latest deadline to come and go in a project that's vexed EWSU, motorists, and Downtown-area residents since the sinkhole opened near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Cherry Street on Feb. 24 due to a damaged sewer line nestled 20 feet below the asphalt.
