Tropical Cyclone Fina is moving across the Northern Territory today, threatening Darwin and its surrounds with extreme weather conditions, as emergency services urge residents to use "common sense and stay safe".

According to the Bureau of Meteorology's (BOM) latest update, just before 4:30am on Saturday, the weather system is impacting Cobourg Peninsula in remote western Arnhem Land and eastern parts of Tiwi Islands.

The category two system has crossed Cobourg Peninsula and moved into the Van Dieman Gulf and will move "to the north of Darwin" later today, the BOM said.

"After passing Darwin, Fina is forecast to further intensify to a severe tropical cyclone on Sunday or early Monday as it moves through the southern Timor Sea,"
