Marking World Fisheries Day on Friday, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi issued a strong appeal for greater protection, fair remuneration and improved facilities for India’s fishing communities, saying their contribution to the nation’s food systems and cultural identity remains both immense and undervalued.
In a message on X, the Congress leader said, “On World Fisheries Day, my heart is with our fishing communities across India — from the vast coasts of our seas to the rivers, lakes and backwaters that flow through our land.”
He described fishing families as vital to the country’s sustenance and economy. “You keep our plates full and our economy moving. You are the guardians of our waters, the keepers of age-old wisdom, and an inseparable part of India’s cultural fabric,” he said.
