Officials in Brampton are calling for an expansion of the city’s landlord licensing pilot in the wake of a a sprawling fire at an illegal rental property that left three people dead, following years of attempts to force the landlord to comply with safety regulations.

A total of 11 people were inside the semi-detached property on Banas Way when a fire broke out early Thursday morning. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, while four others, including a child, were rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition, police say.

Three of the residents were initially unaccounted for, and crews have since recovered a body at the scene.

It was an “incredible tragedy,” Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown told reporters outside the home on Thursday. “Our hearts are heavy today.”
