PLEASANT GARDEN, N.C. — State officials and UNC researchers moved quickly this week after elevated levels of PFAS were discovered in the Pleasant Garden Fire Department’s well, prompting an immediate temporary water supply and plans for long-term treatment.
Mayor Dean Maddox said the response began Tuesday afternoon when Sen. Phil Berger notified him about concerns involving the fire station’s well. By Wednesday morning, multiple state agencies, county leaders and researchers were already meeting at Town Hall.
Maddox described the coordination as unusually fast and effective.
“We identified what the topic was. We identified what the immediate solution could be… and it ended on implementation,” he said. “I have not seen anything move this quickly with this decisive speed.”
