LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -It’s a basic need, yet many across our community go hungry every day.

“Over these last three years, we’ve raised 2,000 pounds of food which is an entire ton of food that we’ve raised,” said Joe Chizick, an Okemos Junior.

Okemos High School students are raising money and food for local food banks and increasing awareness about food insecurity.

“I realized that we need to do something and take action, and the time is now,” said Lahari Raja, an Okemos senior.

Lahari Raja, the founder of the “Crunch The Hunger” initiative and food drive, noticed a need when she was in elementary school.

“I found the support, I found the principles, I found the community I needed, and I started to believe in myself and the mission,” Raja said.
