One Embry-Riddle student had a close call while heading to a basketball game.
"Cars can turn right on the right way, but they have to wait for pedestrians, and she did not want to wait. So it was a close call, but we were OK," said Donovan Livingston, a student.
While he walked away safely, others did not.
Volusia County ranks among the top 25 counties in Florida for crashes that cause serious injuries or deaths to pedestrians, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department.
Residents say they see the danger every day.
"You know that U.S. 1 from Mason to Beville is one of the most dangerous sections in America. And the sidewalks are like 65 years old, in shambles," said Ray, a Daytona Beach resident.
