JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Trailer Bridge barge looted off the coast of the Bahamas is now back in Jacksonville, ending a chaotic nine-day ordeal that left nearly every container on board broken into, stripped, or dumped into the ocean.
What began as a mechanical failure has spiraled into a damaging cargo loss for Trailer Bridge.
The trouble began on November 11, when the tug Southern Dawn suffered a mechanical failure during severe weather en route to Puerto Rico.
The tow wire snapped, leaving the Brooklyn Bridge barge adrift before it grounded on a reef roughly three miles off the Bahamas.
With no power, the stranded barge quickly caught the attention of locals.
