HENDERSON, Texas (KLTV) - Rusk County officials have revealed the third suspect’s identity in the 1983 murder of five people kidnapped from a Kilgore restaurant.
Mary Tyler, Opie Hughes, Joey Johnson, David Maxwell and Monty Landers were first taken from a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant on Sept. 23, 1983.
They were then driven to a gas well lease in Rusk County and killed. DNA evidence led to the arrest of Romeo Pinkerton and Darnell Hartsfield in 2005, with Pinkerton pleading guilty in 2007 and Hartsfield being convicted in 2008.
The lead prosecutor on the case Lisa Tanner identified the third suspect as Devan Riggs on Friday afternoon. Riggs was born in the 1950s and died in 2010 from natural causes.
