Authorities arrested a man two months after he allegedly scammed a 75-year-old Keyport woman out of $36,000 in cash.
Hriday Arya, 25, was taken into custody Tuesday in Jersey City by U.S. Marshals, Keyport police said in a statement. He is charged with two counts of theft.
An investigation revealed Arya may have stolen more than $1 million by defrauding people across the country, authorities said.
Arya was arrested in Connecticut in September for allegedly scamming a victim out of $25,000 in a voice phishing scheme, according to GreenwichFreePress.com . In that scam, a person is tricked into revealing credit card or bank account information over the phone.
The Keyport victim reported the fraud on Sept. 18. A warrant for Arya’s arrest was issued on Oct. 14.
