PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - Illinois coroners are worried a bill that could reshape the state’s approach to end-of-life care could weaken transparency and public oversight.
The medical aid-in-dying bill is currently awaiting Governor JB Pritzker’s signature. If approved, it would allow terminally ill patients meeting certain criteria to obtain a lethal dose of medication from a physician.
County coroners are concerned because the statute exempts medically assisted suicides from a coroner investigation. Instead, the investigation is handled by the physician who prescribed the medication. The cause of death would be considered natural causes.
County coroners have long played a central role in reviewing and certifying deaths across the state.
