Everyone will know by now the suffering that a Welsh town has endured in the days following Storm Claudia. As I approached Monmouth I carried with me only the images already etched into the public mind: a high street swallowed by floodwater, piles of debris and ruined furniture stacked outside battered shopfronts, and the unmistakable sense of misery hanging over its residents.
It's a sight that stirs deep empathy yet one you cannot truly grasp until you have walked the streets yourself and spoken with the people now grappling with the loss of their livelihoods – all of it unfolding just weeks before Christmas .
