The visitors were bowled out for 172 in a session-and-a-half, but their blushes were saved by a blistering spell of bowling from Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Brydon Carse. Then the hot hand of lion-hearted captain Ben Stokes took five remarkable final-hour wickets to leave Australia 9-123 and 49 runs behind.

Tailenders Nathan Lyon (3) and Brendan Doggett (yet to score) will resume on Saturday. Stokes has 5-23 after six overs.
