Victorian police have charged a 32-year-old man following an alleged car theft while a toddler was sleeping inside.

The man was on bail at the time of the alleged vehicle theft.

Police recently released shocking footage of the man dumping the sleeping baby in a box in a supermarket carpark, where the theft took place.

Shepparton police said the vehicle was parked on Maude Street just before 2pm while the driver quickly ducked into the supermarket.

The man then allegedly seized the chance to steal the red Volkswagen and reversed out of the carpark before he noticed the sleeping baby.

The baby was immediately found by the car owner who raised the alarm and notified police.

The 15-month-baby was not harmed.
