Thiruvananthapuram: It may seem trivial, but to survive in the world of cinema for over half a century with a kerchief around his forehead and patting on chest is no small feat. Balachandra Menon, 71, who has carved a unique path of innovation in Malayalam cinema, continues to look forward to creating new films even as he completes 50 years in the industry.

Starting as a film journalist in 1975, Menon’s extraordinary career, which eventually earned him the National Award and the Padma Shri, is now being celebrated by his friends. “I am still thinking about directing a film soon,” said Menon, who is currently acting in B Unnikrishnan’s film portraying former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
