Evergreen Matildas striker Michelle Heyman has led Canberra United to a 3-0 victory over Perth for their first win of the A-League Women season.

Elsewhere, Newcastle are the unlikely league leaders after stalwart Lauren Allan delivered a 1-0 win over battling Western Sydney in her 100th game.

At McKellar Park, 37-year-old Heyman, who is keen to cement her Matildas spot ahead of March's Asian Cup, only needed three minutes to give Canberra the lead.

Tegan Bertolissio released Josie Aulicino with a terrific long ball and she slipped through Heyman, who toepoked home from close range.

Five minutes later, Canberra doubled their lead.

Bethany Gordon floated in a free kick and Emma Robers rose highest to beat Perth goalkeeper Alyssa Dall'Oste with a looping header.
