Petrol and diesel drivers could face penalties for unauthorised use of electric car spaces in a new crackdown. It has been revealed that 140,000 fines have been issued to drivers who've parked in electric vehicle charging spaces.

In 2020, councils issued 8,642 fines for misusing EV bays, with the figure rising to 46,128 last year. By August this year, councils across the UK had already handed out 38,326 fines.

On average, councils have been issuing about 4,791 fines per month this year, compared with 3,844 per month in 2024. Newcastle City Council reported 19,404 penalties, while Coventry City Council in the West Midlands issued 15,261 fines.
