Gov. Patrick Morrisey was remarkably candid this week, conceding that West Virginia families are struggling with a “higher cost of living,” the result of soaring costs for necessities including electricity and groceries.
Being a Republican, his solution for that economic pain is to propose a tax break that would largely benefit wealthier residents, in the form of another round of state income tax cuts.
Legislation enacted in 2023 to lower income taxes features an entirely sensible formula linking future tax cuts to growth in the state economy. To bypass that formula would not only be foolhardy, but a concession that the current round of tax cuts haven’t grown the economy as promised.
