U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Alito issued a stay halting a lower court's ruling and allowing Texas to use a new redistricting map that voting rights groups claim targets minorities .

Alito, appointed by President George W. Bush, issued a late-night stay Friday, Nov. 21, reversing a split 2-1 ruling from a three-judge panel on Tuesday, Nov. 18. The panel had found “substantial evidence” that Texas racially gerrymandered its 2025 redistricting map, barred its use in the midterm elections, and ordered the state to revert to its 2021 maps.

Alito was the sole justice to issue the order since he oversees emergency stays in Texas. The other justices will weigh in on the issue when the lawsuit is presented before the Supreme Court.
