Netflix’s new mini-series " Death by Lightning " revisits the assassination of President James Garfield, but leaves out a key setting: Long Branch, the Jersey Shore town where he spent his final days.
Believing salt air had healing powers, doctors put the dying president on a train to Long Branch in the summer of 1881 in a desperate bid to save him two months after he was shot by assassin Charles Guiteau.
Guiteau’s obsession with the president led him to pull the trigger, but it was likely the infection caused by doctors’ unsanitary practices that led to his death in Long Branch on September 19, 1881.
Those are two of the storylines explored by the four-part mini-series currently streaming on Netflix.
