COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The man convicted in the 2021 shooting deaths of a young Cobb County couple was sentenced to two life sentences without the possibility of parole on Friday.
Matthew Lanz was a UGA student when he drove from Athens to the home of Justin and Amber Hicks who were spending an evening a home with their two-year-old son. Lanz appeared in their backyard and stood there for almost an hour staring at them before breaking into their home.

During the four-day trial, testimony from law enforcement, video of a police interview with Lanz and video of an interview with Lanz's parents were presented before Judge Sonja N. Brown. Since Lanz waived his right to a jury tria l, the
