One of Gary 'Mani' Mounfield's most acclaimed moments in music came on the banks of the River Mersey . The rock musician's death at the age of 63 was announced on Thursday, November 20.

Mani, who was from Crumpsall in north Manchester , shot to stardom after joining The Stone Roses in the 1980s. He was the bassist for the famous Manchester band until 1996, and went on to join Primal Scream . In 2011, he announced that he had left Primal Scream to reform The Stone Roses.

The Stone Roses became so popular in part due to their working class authenticity , with songs touching on rebellion and self-discovery that that resonated with people across the country, reports Manchester E
