Eighteen months ago, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy was dealing with the equivalent of a run on a bank.
Donors spooked by the revelation the conservancy's chief financial officer, Will Smith, had bilked the revered River Walk of more than $44 million wanted to know if their money had been pilfered, and whether it was safe to put more dollars into the still-to-be completed project.
