BLACK EARTH, Wis. – The gun deer season in Wisconsin kicked off on November 22, later than usual. Salmo Pond in Black Earth is one of several sites where hunters can drop off their deer for chronic wasting disease (CWD) testing.

This year marks Tyson Pooch's sixth year joining fellow Wisconsinites in the woods.

"I'm glad that they have a lot of kiosks and places for us to test. It's nice to have that around," Pooch said.

For many, the opening day is a cherished tradition with familiar rituals.

"All I do is I sit in the stand, enjoy the weather and count how many gunshots I can hear in the area," Pooch said.

"In the first two hours, about 40 gunshots. And that's it. I saw one doe this morning and then another doe this evening," Pooch said.
