The odds of hitting an animal with your vehicle in Michigan are about 1 in 61, which ranks fourth nationally according to national auto insurer State Farm.

Michigan had about 126,000 insurance claims related to animal collisions between July 2024 and June 2025. That was a slight decrease year-over-year, State Farm reported this fall.

In 2024, Michigan drivers reported 58,324 deer-vehicle crashes. It was a slight decrease compared to the previous two years, but a nearly 28% increase from the 45,690 crashes reported in 2014.

Drivers are hitting more deer in recent years, resulting in costly repairs. White-tailed deer alone account for $130 million in costs to drivers annually, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
