EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The McCutchanville Fire Department is hoping people in the Tri-State will have a safe Thanksgiving.

In a Facebook post, fire officials gave tips and information on the increase of house fires caused by cooking.

In the post, officials say the U.S. Fire Administration reports that cooking fires double on Thanksgiving, which causes an average of $28 million in property damage each year.

A big uptick in the fires are caused by deep frying turkeys, and officials say there are several dangers included with the non-traditional cooking method.

Fire fighters say deep frying a turkey requires oil heated to temperatures of 350-degrees Fahrenheit or higher, and at that temperature, the risk for cooking oil vapors to ignite increases.
