Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with an attempted murder investigation in Newcastle. This follows a violent incident that left a man and a woman, both in their 60s, with serious injuries. Emergency services responded to reports of concern for the pair at a property on Durham Street in Elswick at approximately 6.45pm on Friday.
The woman has sustained a serious head injury and is currently in critical condition, while the man is reported to be in a stable condition despite his serious injuries. On Sunday afternoon, several police vehicles were still present at the scene, where a cordon has been established since Friday. A forensic tent has been erected outside the property, with officers seen collecting evidence.
Initially, a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Following this, seven additional arrests were made, bringing the total to eight men currently in custody. Among those arrested, five men—two in their 20s, two in their 30s, and one in his 40s—are suspected of attempted murder. A man in his 50s has been detained on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, while two others, one in his 40s and another in his 60s, are suspected of assisting an offender.
Northumbria Police are appealing for information from the public, particularly regarding a red Renault Twingo believed to be linked to the incident. The vehicle was reportedly parked in the West End of Newcastle between 6.30pm and 8pm on Friday before being discovered in Longbenton the following morning.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton, the senior investigating officer, stated, "Eight suspects are now in custody being questioned, and I would like to reassure our communities that extensive enquiries into this serious incident have already been carried out." He expressed gratitude to those who have come forward with information and urged anyone who may have seen the Renault Twingo to contact the police.
Atherton added, "Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could prove vital to establishing exactly what happened that evening. We expect our cordon to remain in place for some time, and we would like to thank the community for their patience as we conduct further enquiries."
The police have emphasised that this remains an active investigation and have requested the public to refrain from speculation. They maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and are committed to finding answers for the victims' families.
