Eight people have been arrested as part of an attempted murder investigation in Newcastle.

The arrests follow an attack that left a woman and man, both in their 60s , with serious injuries. Emergency services were called to reports of concern for the pair at an address on Durham Street in Elswick at around 6.45pm on Friday.

The woman sustained a serious head injury and is in critical condition, while the man suffered serious injuries and is in a stable condition.

Several police vehicles remained at the scene on Sunday afternoon, where a cordon has been in place since Friday. A forensic tent has been set up in front of the property, with forensic officers seen entering and exiting as well as placing items into evidence bags.
