PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Arizona Humane Society is warning people of a new scam targeting families who have lost pets.

AHS has received multiple reports of people contacting owners of missing pets online and pretending to be from the humane society.

The scammers are telling families that their pets have been found but need emergency medical treatment. Then, they demand that the families send them money, according to AHS.

“We understand how stressful and emotional it can be when a pet is missing, and it’s upsetting that anyone would take advantage of that vulnerable moment. Our goal is to ensure our community has accurate information and feels supported during these situations,” Kelsey Dickerson with the Arizona Humane Society said.
