MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WSFA ) - Former Alabama U.S. Senator Doug Jones will be throwing his hat into the 2026 Alabama governor’s race, according to multiple reports.

Details are very limited at this time, but sources close to Jones confirmed Sunday that he will be, “filing the necessary paperwork” to run for the governor’s seat.

Jones, a member of the Democratic Party, served Alabama in the U.S. Senate from 2018-2021. He was the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 1991 to 2001.

In 2020, Jones was unseated by Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville, who announced his own candidacy for governor in late May .

As of 2025, Jones is the last democrat to have held a statewide office in Alabama.
