JACKSON — Wyoming lawmakers are proposing to raise the starting salary for teachers to $70,000, but education advocates are wary, saying the measure may end up hurting public school employees.

In Teton County, where the cost of living is sky high and the school district already pays teachers a higher amount, one trustee said the proposal could be a “disaster” for the district.

The recommendation is part of a draft bill that will be presented to the Legislature’s Select Committee on School Finance Recalibration in January, before being sent to the Joint Appropriations Committee.

Kristen Mayo, the finance manager for Teton County School District, gave trustees an update on the committee’s recommendations at the Nov. 12 board meeting.
