A Virginia father is facing charges after police say his 4-year-old son got hold of an unsecured gun inside their apartment and accidentally shot himself in the leg.
Prince William County Police said officers were called shortly after 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22 to the Townsquare at Dumfries Apartments in the 3900 block of Townsquare Court for a reported shooting involving a child.
According to investigators, the boy “was able to access an unsecured firearm that was inside a closet.”
Police said that “as the child handled the weapon, it discharged, striking the victim in the leg.”
Officers arrived and immediately provided aid before the child was taken to a local hospital. His injury was determined to be non-life-threatening, police said.
Following their investigation, officers charged Gerardo Anthonio Mejia, 26, of Dumfries, with allowing access to firearms by children.
Police said Mejia was released on a court summons.
No photo of Mejia was provided.
The investigation remains ongoing.
