BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Nearly 40 Gainesville High football players will be suspended for the school's playoff quarterfinal game after a brawl erupted in the previous round's game against Brunswick, causing an abrupt halt to that contest on Friday night.
The Georgia High School Association said in a statement that the game "took an unfortunate turn when a fight broke out near the end of the third quarter" and that following a review of the incident, the GHSA announced 39 Gainesville players have been suspended.
The school has also been fined $5,000, the GHSA said.
Gainesville is appealing, the organization's statement added. That appeal will be held on Tuesday morning virtually before the GHSA Board of Trustees.
