TOWN OF ALEXANDRIA, New York (WWNY) - Just outside of Alexandria Bay, a culvert with potential ties to the War of 1812 is set to be demolished and replaced, but a few history buffs aren’t letting it happen without a fight.
It’s on Swan Hollow Road, hovering over Cranberry Creek. It’s been in Stephen Sourwine’s backyard for his whole life.
It’s a culvert, New York’s parks, recreation, and historic preservationists say, that is a rare surviving example of a segmental stone arch culvert, and it’s believed to have been used by American soldiers during the War of 1812 while transporting British prisoners after winning the battle of Cranberry Creek.
Fast forward to today, and it’s on the town of Alexandria’s chopping block. Set to be demolished next year, something Sourwine is fighting.
