LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Doctors at Norton Healthcare and Norton Children’s say flu is already circulating in Louisville, and they’ve moved operations from green to yellow as cases rise.
Emergency departments are seeing more patients whose symptoms are too severe to manage at home.
“We are seeing your typical flu symptoms in the ER. We’re seeing people with fevers that aren’t being relieved by Tylenol or ibuprofen, severe chills, muscle aches, and then occasionally we will see shortness of breath and chest pain,” said Dr. Thomas Cunningham of Norton Emergency Medicine.
Cunningham says unvaccinated patients, especially young children, older adults, and those who are immunocompromised, are presenting with more severe illness.
Doctors are closely watching a new flu variant, known as Subclade K,
